Description longue de la ressource.
Anglais In the 11th century, the Lord of Biches, Gauthier "le Fort", founded a Benedictine priory dedicated to Saint-Victor and dependent on the priory of La Charité-sur-Loire.
A few vestiges of this primitive 11th-century church remain, such as the two columns with capitals sculpted in bas-relief in the chevet wall, traces of the destroyed choir. One of the capitals features walking animals and a stylised plant frieze; its southern counterpart is decorated with large smooth leaves.
Having become a parish church, it suffered heavily during the Wars of Religion in the mid-16th century, when a fire destroyed it and the priory. Both were quickly rebuilt, before being sold as national property during the Revolution. The commune bought the church in 1807 and carried out various repairs throughout the 19th century.
The church's imposing portal is protected by a lean-to canopy. The timber-framed bell tower crowns the gable end of the church façade.
Inside, two statues of saints stand out: that of Saint-Victor, patron saint of the former Benedictine priory and parish, and Saint-Maurice, patron saint of knights, crusaders and soldiers.
These statues represent these saints in armour, as they were both soldiers. Their presence in the church stems from the proximity of a commandery in the commune of Biches, founded at the end of the 12th century by the Hospitallers of Jerusalem and subsequently owned by various military and religious orders.
