Description
Description longue de la ressource.
Anglais The Saint-Amour apothecary boasts a stunning interior set within a 17th-century convent that was converted into a hospital in the 19th century.

Built between 1819 and 1824 in the former 17th-century Capuchin convent, this hospital was a major institution in its day, caring for patients for over 100 years. Today, this well-preserved and carefully restored building has become a health centre. The patients’ wards from that era, as well as the chapel, are still clearly visible.

The apothecary’s room in this former hospital – the forerunner of our modern pharmacies – is certainly one of the most spacious in the Jura, if not the whole of Franche-Comté.

The large room, known as the ‘preparatory room’, features magnificent wood panelling crafted by a cabinetmaker from Saint-Amour, as well as trompe-l’œil decorations, a medallion adorned with flowers and medicinal plants, and a floor laid with local marble.

During a guided tour, you’ll discover a fascinating place: its herbalist’s furniture and its collection of over 300 jars from various periods between the 16th and 19th centuries, including two mysterious 16th-century jars. Teriac jars, small jars, pill boxes, cannon-shaped jars, glass jars, measuring and medicine-preparation instruments… You’ll be able to see a wide variety of containers and understand their uses.

Immerse yourself in the history of healthcare in the town of Saint-Amour, marked by a tradition of caring for the sick stretching back nearly 1,000 years, as the first facility to welcome the sick dates back to the 11th century!
