Anglais One exhibition, one day each month, thirty minutes, one animal family leading to the works!
Animals are at the heart of the museum's concerns this year, so it's only natural that they should lead curious visitors to the works that represent them. Moving from one animal to another, the animal families will offer an opportunity for artistic and eclectic discoveries... For the last of the year, there's a change of latitude, and we're heading for adventure with the EXOTIC ANIMALS, who are our tour guides, so follow them!
Here we mean exotic in the sense of non-endemic, in other words animal species that do not live in our climate but which nevertheless appear in our art. Although we know how the Romans used them, particularly in the arena, and the prestige that the great and the good of the world derived from them in their menageries, until the end of the Middle Ages, exotic animals were little more than tools or stooges. It wasn't until the Renaissance that people finally took an interest in them without any ulterior motive, and they became objects of research. It was only a short step from aristocratic menageries to zoos, and from the 19th century onwards, artists began to portray these animals in the same way as they would humans, by visiting zoos and museums, for example.
The exhibition takes a closer look at the latter process, during which lions, rhinoceroses, elephants, bears, etc. went from being precious commodities or even the stars of fairs, symbols of power or propaganda tools, to being the subjects of scientific or artistic studies. After an overview of animal representations in the 17th and 18th centuries, we will then look at some of the great contemporary animal artists, from Antoine-Louis Barye to François Pompon.
The Musée de la Loire invites you to join us for a cultural and artistic lunch break. If you've got nothing else to do, and you're not afraid of going goat... then why not join us? Then join us, and if we can't get you to swallow anything, we'll do our best to amaze you every month with the most beautiful animal representations in our exhibition!
