Anglais Built in the 13th century, the abbey church overlooks the village of Saint-Martin-aux-Bois, home to canons regular of the Saint-Augustin order. Built in Gothic style, the abbey had a major spiritual and cultural influence, and was one of the first French historic monuments to be listed, in 1840. During the wars of the 15th century, the abbey was destroyed: first by a fire in the cloister buildings, then looted by French troops. Few buildings have survived, apart from the Galata (the Abbey's former guesthouse, now privately owned), but the landscape seen from the church's parapet walk allows us to follow the old surrounding wall and imagine the space occupied by the refectory, the dormitory and the monks' cemetery. Following this destruction, the abbey church remained poor and had to be attached to the Sainte-Geneviève congregation in Paris in 1644. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the abbey church was completely restored. The vaulted ceiling reaches a height of around 27m, which is why the abbey is often compared to the choir of Beauvais's Saint-Pierre cathedral. Organize a visit and discover the impressive dimensions of this abbey church, with its 7 recently restored bay windows, its stalls and misericords, its murals and its 16th-century painted wooden pulpit.
