In a fragile miniature world of matches and paper, Lukas delves into the indoctrination of a young man in 1930s Austria. The matches crackle and burn away. The smoke clouds Lukas’s investigation. From the Hitler Youth to his enlistment in the Wehrmacht, he traces Leopold’s story back through time. How far will he go into the horrors of Nazism? Was he an accomplice? Did he have a choice? Tout commence lorsque, dans la vie de Lukas, le passé trouble de son grand-oncle autrichien, Léopold, ressurgit soudainement. Jusqu’alors, pour lui, son grand-oncle, c’était les descentes à ski, les saucisses au fromage ou les matchs de football. Et puis, un jour, sans prévenir, des croix gammées lui tombent sur la tête — littéralement.
Dans un fragile monde miniature d’allumettes et de papier, Lukas plonge dans l’endoctrinement d’un jeune homme des années 1930 en Autriche. Les allumettes craquent et se consument. La fumée embrume l’enquête de Lukas. Des Jeunesses hitlériennes à son engagement dans la Wehrmacht, il remonte le fil de l’histoire de Léopold. Jusqu’où ira t-il dans l’horreur nazie ? Était-il complice ? Avait-il le choix ? Que savait-il vraiment ?

Doch dann, eines Tages, ohne Vorwarnung, fallen ihm Hakenkreuze auf den Kopf – im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.
In einer zerbrechlichen Miniaturwelt aus Streichhölzern und Papier taucht Lukas in die Indoktrination eines jungen Mannes im Österreich der 1930er Jahre ein. Die Streichhölzer knacken und verbrennen. Der Rauch trübt Lukas’ Nachforschungen. Von der Hitlerjugend bis zu seinem Eintritt in die Wehrmacht verfolgt er Leopold’s Lebensgeschichte zurück. Wie weit wird er in den nazistischen Schrecken vordringen? War er mitschuldig? Hatte er eine Wahl? Was wusste er wirklich?
