De kindertijd, een periode die bepalend is voor het verdere leven, omvat realiteiten die vaak complexer en diverser zijn dan men zou denken, die zowel verband houden met de persoonlijke geschiedenis van elk individu als met het tijdperk, de sociale omgeving of de regio waarin het wordt beleefd.
Lange tijd werd het kind beschouwd als een onvolgroeid wezen, verstoken van verstand en een eigen persoonlijkheid, maar geleidelijk aan heeft het een nieuwe plaats in de samenleving verworven.
