In the Name of the Sea: Toward Sustainable Fishing?

Never before have fishing and aquaculture played such a vital role in the food supply and livelihoods of so many people. But one alarming announcement follows another, promising this world on borrowed time a very bleak future: no more fish by 2050, meaning no more fishermen, no more jobs, and a food crisis in many countries. Are humans inexorably heading toward the depletion of these resources? Or are they capable of adapting to save themselves?

Do the cutting-edge technologies being developed in the sector help protect it, or will they once again hasten the catastrophe? Between historical context, the realities of today’s fishing—whether artisanal or industrial—and ecological and animal welfare concerns, the goal is to unravel the workings of a global system that has never been more efficient at bringing about its own downfall. Through encounters with fishermen, researchers, industry representatives, and people from Europe to Africa, this film offers a global perspective on fishing and questions our ability to fish in a truly “sustainable” manner.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the Departmental Committee on Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture.
