Een oude Poolse dame woont in een bejaardentehuis. Niemand vermoedt welke heldendaden Irena Sendler tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft verricht: de redding van 2.500 Joodse kinderen uit het getto van Warschau. Drie middelbare scholieren uit Kansas doen onderzoek naar haar verhaal; Irena roept de geesten uit haar verleden op en reconstrueert de flarden van een herinnering die langzaam vervaagt.
Deze veelzijdige voorstelling verweeft fictie en werkelijkheid, verleden en heden, echte actrices en marionetten-objecten, zodat het onvoorstelbare in het geheugen gegrift blijft. Want er zijn geen grote of kleine verhalen in het leven: er is alleen het Leven!

Trois lycéennes du Kansas enquêtent sur son histoire ; Irena convoque les fantômes de son passé et reconstitue les bribes d'une mémoire qui s'étiole.
