Hij groeit op in een klein dorpje vlak bij de zee, vlak bij de invasiestranden.
Hoewel hij veel uit boeken heeft geleerd, is het Hélène die hem heeft laten begrijpen hoe het leven er tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitzag.
Hélène is de grootmoeder van Léon, maar wanneer ze hem over haar jeugd vertelt, is het alsof twee kinderen van 10 elkaar leren kennen.
De oorlog, de rantsoenbonnen, de gevangenschap, de bezetting, het verzet… Hélène heeft het allemaal met haar kinderogen gezien. Ze deelt haar herinneringen met Léon, waardoor er een kostbare en onverbrekelijke band tussen hen ontstaat.
