Onder hen bevindt zich Edouard, „schoonmaker“ in een theater, die op een avond tussen twee schoonmaakbeurten door een generale repetitie van een grote première bijwoont.
Dat lijkt de theaterdirecteur helemaal niet te bevallen; hij is zowel een ervaren regisseur als een verfoeilijk persoon, die Edouard degradeert tot „kleine verdiener“ om hem vervolgens terug te sturen naar zijn kleedkamer… als onderhoudsmedewerker.
Toch worden deze twee mannen, die in alles van elkaar verschillen, gedreven door dezelfde passie?
