À la création, à Milan, Toscanini a déposé sa baguette en disant : « C’est là que Puccini a interrompu son travail. La mort, cette fois, a été plus forte que l’art. » Puccini rêvait de finir sur un duo d’amour aussi beau que celui de Tristan. Tras la primera ópera de Puccini, he aquí la última. Quedó inconclusa, ya que el compositor falleció de cáncer de garganta, tras haber pasado su vida compitiendo con la de sus intérpretes. Franco Alfano terminó la obra a partir de las notas que dejó Puccini.
En el estreno, en Milán, Toscanini dejó la batuta diciendo: «Aquí es donde Puccini interrumpió su trabajo. La muerte, esta vez, fue más fuerte que el arte». Puccini soñaba con terminar con un dúo de amor tan bello como el de Tristán. Tuvo que conformarse con la más famosa de las arias para tenor: «Nessun dorma».
Inspirada en un cuento de Carlo Gozzi, Turandot narra la historia de una princesa cruel en una China imaginaria. El pretendiente que responda a tres preguntas se convertirá en rey de China; los demás serán ejecutados. Una obra grandiosa, trágica, cómica, apasionada y exótica.
