In the absence of written records, we can only speculate as to what William the Conqueror spoke. However, literary texts written in the Norman and Anglo--Norman region in the 11th and 12th centuries allow us to put forward hypotheses, which are supported both by modern Norman dialects and by contemporary English, which provides a wealth of evidence regarding the language introduced into England by the Duke-King and his barons.
