Anglais The Church of Saint-Amateur-et-Saint-Viateur in Saint-Amour has its origins in an ancient foundation, which was converted into a collegiate church in 1632. The chancel, dating from the late 15th century, is one of the oldest parts of the building. The bell tower, meanwhile, was rebuilt between 1611 and 1616 by the master mason Oddot, following damage sustained during the siege of 1637, which partially destroyed the church. These events marked the beginning of a long period of reconstruction and restoration work.
The reconstruction of the church spanned much of the 17th century, with work continuing until 1709, notably including the nave, which was built in the early 18th century. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was added in 1738, thus completing the building. In the 19th century, restoration work was undertaken to finalise the interior décor and furnishings, consolidating the church’s current appearance. These successive interventions reflect the importance of this place of worship to the local community.
The church is now partially listed as a Historic Monument. The bell tower, listed by decree of 30 April 1996, and the rest of the building, listed since 9 November 1994, bear witness to its architectural and historical heritage.
