Description
Description longue de la ressource.

Anglais Hugstein Castle is the only medieval military relic of this size in the district of Guebwiller. Pampered by the municipalities of Guebwiller and Buhl (the intermunicipal boundary line runs through the centre of the keep!), the site has benefited for many years from several maintenance and cleaning campaigns.

Built on a rocky hillock at the mouth of the Murbach valley, overlooking Buhl and Guebwiller, the now ruined fortress was built in 1227 on the initiative of Hugo (Hugues), known as Rothenburg, abbot of Murbach, who was promoted prince of the Holy Roman Empire by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. The Alsatian prelate had been rewarded in this way for having accompanied the Swabian emperor to the Holy Land.

Considered as the main defensive site of the abbey principality, the Hugstein (the rock of - the abbot - Hugo) was also and above all responsible for watching over Guebwiller, a city that was sometimes turbulent but nevertheless gradually promoted to the rank of town.

In the 13th century, the castle served as a prison for the felon knights Thierry de Montbéliard and Renaud de Montbéliard, who served the abbey instead of defending its interests. The most famous of Hugstein's inhabitants was undoubtedly Abbot Barthélemy d'Andlau (1447-1476). It is he who apparently had the magnificent gateway tower built and surrounded the castle with additional walls. A great scholar before the Eternal and a true prince of the Alsatian Renaissance, the ecclesiastical dignitary was also a severe administrator, imposing discipline and implacable order in his bailiwicks of Guebwiller, Saint-Amarin and Wattwiller.
