La Fraternelle – End-of-residency event: The ‘S’ Grand Atelier
END-OF-RESIDENCY EVENT at the Maison du Peuple café, Friday 30 October at 6.30 pm (free)
Featuring Robin Cools, Pascal Leyder, Sarah Albert, Jonathan Maréchal, Emilie Raoul & Simon Dureux
The ‘S’ Grand Atelier is a centre for art brut and contemporary art located in Vielsalm in the Belgian Ardennes, renowned for its support of artists living with intellectual disabilities.
Its designation as an ‘art brut & contemporary art centre’ is unique in Belgium and reflects the distinctive nature of this exceptional venue within the Belgian art scene. La ‘‘S’’ Grand Atelier believes that every artist, whether or not they have a mental disability, can contribute to contemporary art, culture and society. By emphasising artistic experimentation, collaboration, dialogue and social diversity, ‘S’ Grand Atelier creates an environment where talent can flourish freely, where labels (disability versus non-disability) no longer apply.
The idea of a creative residency in Saint-Claude forms part of a collective publishing initiative that has been developing within the ‘S’ Grand Atelier through the use of printing techniques and a collaboration with a publishing house, Le frémok, in 2007.
The guest artists will come for two working periods: an initial period of getting to know one another, discovering the town and its inhabitants, and presenting the ‘S’ Grand Atelier and the artists’ work to the public… followed by a second week of production and presentation.
