Synopsis: Arcueil, July 1925: the body of Erik Satie, the French composer and pianist, is found in his flat in a state of disarray and squalor. Throughout his life, he was a misunderstood artist, rejected by the official institutions of his time because of his eccentricities and his ‘aesthetic of poverty’. Yet Satie managed to create music that was both simple and radical, heralding the major musical movements of the 20th century. Drawing on archive footage and personal accounts, this documentary traces the journey of a composer who, by refusing to align himself with any particular musical school, established himself as a pioneer of modernity. A collaborator with Picasso, Cocteau and Duchamp, he turned the musical conventions of his time on their head.
