Description
Description longue de la ressource.
Anglais On a rocky outcrop overlooking the Orb valley, at an altitude of 468 m, a fortified village grew up between the 10th and 12th centuries. Occupied since Gallo-Roman times, the site not only served to control the ancient road linking Béziers and Albi, but also had a sacred function, as attested by its name of Mourcairol, derived from the name of the god Mercury. In the 10th century, construction began on a primitive castle belonging to the Viscounts of Béziers. It comprised a seigneurial dwelling, a keep and a castral chapel dedicated to Saint-Michel, all surrounded by a fortified enclosure. The complex was enlarged and remodeled over the following centuries, as dozens of dwellings clustered around the castle. The village of Mourcairol was gradually abandoned after the ravages of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. Today, a trail leads to the remains of the village and the Saint-Michel chapel, the only building to have survived the passage of time.
