%AB For the paratroopers, war meant danger, daring, and isolation. Among them all, the most exposed, the most daring, and the most solitary were those of the Free French Forces. A vanguard dropped from the skies, deep behind enemy lines, risking everything, entirely on their own—that is how they lost their comrades and earned their glory. %BB
These words by General de Gaulle extol the commitment of the French commandos of the Special Air Service during World War II. These fighters, who described themselves as “ordinary men,” have become legends, sometimes in spite of themselves.
In conjunction with the new permanent space dedicated to them, this exhibition explores the memorial narrative that has been constructed around these elite soldiers. Through pop culture, military tradition, historical publications, and heroic narratives, they remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration more than 80 years after their first exploits.
