He was part of the “Sillon” movement in the early 20th century, driven by his desire to reconcile Catholics with the Republic, and later joined the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), which enjoyedsignificant successes in Finistère during the interwar period, and, finally, he played a role in the founding of the Popular Republican Movement (MRP) at the time of the Liberation. Elected locally as mayor of Plouescat and then as a deputy for the second district of Morlaix beginning in 1924, he demonstrated his commitment to democratic values by refusing to vote in favor of granting full powers to Marshal Pétain in July 1940.
