Anglais A philosopher and philanthropist at the turn of the Grand Siècle and the Age of Enlightenment, the abbot of Saint-Pierre was one of the most original thinkers of his time. He is notably credited with coining the term “benevolence” as well as the now-famous phrase: “the greatest happiness for the greatest number.” Abbot of Tiron-Gardais, chaplain to the Princess Palatine, and member of the Académie française, he participated in 1713 in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Utrecht. From this experience emerged his most famous work, the “Project for Establishing Perpetual Peace in Europe.” In it, the abbot proposed an alliance based on solidarity among European states to prevent wars and guarantee peace. His project, which brings together nineteen European states as well as Turkey, is a striking precursor to the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the European Union. Taken up and developed by Rousseau and then Kant, his ideas remain highly relevant today. At a time when armed conflicts and the destruction of cultural heritage are on the rise, the reflections of the Abbot of Saint-Pierre invite us to rethink the conditions for lasting peace among peoples. This lecture will offer an opportunity to discover the life, work, and legacy of this great Norman thinker, whose humanist vision continues to shed light on the challenges of our time.
