A distant descendant of age-old practices, it found fertile ground to flourish in the following decade, marked by an economic crisis, the birth of the hip hop movement and the questioning of traditional artistic mediums. Immediately opposed by the authorities, this urban or street art was quickly co-opted by the official art world, but remained a protest movement.
