Voor deze nieuwe tentoonstelling in de Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste werd Océane Madelaine – keramiste en schrijfster ? zich in de eerste plaats laten inspireren door woorden, en een titel die zich aan haar opdrong: %AB Dans le subtil %BB. De kunstenares licht deze keuze en de essentie van haar aanpak voor de tentoonstelling als volgt toe.
%AB Het was de wens om aandacht te schenken aan het subtiele, het kwetsbare, %E0 wat trilt %E0 aan het oppervlak van de materie: sporen, %E9geschriften, lijnen, vlekken, minuscule trillingen die ons raken en ontroeren. Subtil komt van sub, %AB onder %BB, en tela, %AB doek %BB. We bevinden ons onder de draden van het weefsel dat wordt geweven, onder de woorden van de tekst, onder de huid van de klei. Met die onwankelbare overtuiging dat in een brute wereld de dingen ook plaatsvinden in het subtiele, in het verborgen, dat het van onderaf werkt, ondanks ons, dat het klopt en dat het oneindig weerstand biedt.
Deze zoektocht naar het subtiele heeft, zoals altijd bij mij, vorm gekregen in vaten: grote kommen, dozen, maar vooral in kruiken, een nieuwe vorm die ik deze winter onder de knie heb gekregen. Geleid door de toverspreuk van Michel Leiris, %AB Klei: ik lees er de kruik in %BB, (in Langage Tangage), heb ik op mijn beurt geprobeerd deze vorm met mijn handen te lezen. Door de voet, de ronding, de schouder en de hals te ontcijferen, legde ik een architectuur bloot die tegelijkertijd minimalistisch en ruimtelijk is, voorouderlijk en krachtig. Om er niet langer voorraden meel, olie of honing in te bewaren, maar, naar ik hoop, subtiele reserves aan betekenis.

Per questa nuova mostra alla Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste, Océane Madelaine — ceramista e donna di lettere ? è stata inizialmente %E9t%E9 ossessionata dalle parole e da un titolo che le si è imposto: %AB Dans le subtil %BB. L’artista spiega così questa scelta e l’essenza del suo approccio alla mostra.
«Era il desiderio di prestare attenzione a ciò che è tenue, a ciò che è fragile, %E0 ciò che freme %E0 sulla superficie della materia: tracce, %E9scritti, linee, macchie, vibrazioni impercettibili che ci scuotono e ci %E9mozionano. «Subtil» deriva da «sub», «sotto», e «tela», «tessuto». È come se ci trovassimo sotto i fili della trama, sotto le parole del testo, sotto la superficie dell’argilla. Con questa convinzione, incrollabile, che in un mondo brutale le cose avvengano anche nel sottile, nel segreto, che %E7a operi dal basso, nostro malgrado, che %E7a palpiti e che %E7a resista, all’infinito.
Questa ricerca del sottile ha preso forma, come sempre per me, in contenitori: grandi ciotole, scatole, ma soprattutto in vasi, una nuova forma che ho imparato a domare quest’inverno. Guidata dalla formula magica di Michel Leiris, «Argilla: vi leggo la giara» (in *Langage Tangage*), ho cercato a mia volta di leggere questa forma con le mie mani. Decifrandone il piede, la curvatura, la spalla, il collo, mettendo in luce un’architettura minimale e al tempo stesso ampia, ancestrale, potente. Per custodirvi, non più provviste di grano, olio o miele, ma, spero, sottili riserve di significato.

Pour cette nouvelle exposition à la Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste, Océane Madelaine – céramiste et femme de lettres – a d’abord été hantée par des mots, et un titre qui s’est imposé à elle : « Dans le subtil ». L’artiste explique ainsi ce choix et l’essence de sa démarche pour l’exposition.
« C’était le désir de porter attention au ténu, au fragile, à ce qui tressaille à la surface de la matière : traces, écritures, lignes, taches, vibrations infimes qui nous remuent et nous émeuvent. Subtil vient de sub, « sous », et tela, « toile ». On serait sous les fils de la chaîne à tisser, sous les mots du texte, sous la peau de l’argile. Avec cette conviction, inébranlable, que dans un monde brutal, les choses ont aussi lieu dans le subtil, dans le secret, que ça travaille par en dessous, malgré nous, que ça palpite et que ça résiste, infiniment.
Cette quête du subtil a pris forme, comme toujours chez moi, dans des contenants : grands bols, boites, mais surtout dans des jarres, nouvelle forme apprivoisée cet hiver. Guidée par la formule magique de Michel Leiris, « Argile : j’y lis la jarre », (dans Langage Tangage), j’ai cherché à mon tour à lire cette forme avec mes mains. En décrypter le pied, le galbe, l’épaule, le col, mettant à jour une architecture minimale et ample à la fois, ancestrale, puissante. Pour mettre à l’abri, non plus des provisions de blé, d’huile ou de miel, mais, je l’espère, des réserves subtiles de sens.

Para esta nueva exposición en la Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste, ¿Océane Madelaine — ceramista y mujer de letras — se ha dejado llevar en primer lugar por las palabras y por un título que se le impuso: «Dans le subtil». La artista explica así esta elección y la esencia de su enfoque para la exposición.
«Era el deseo de prestar atención a lo sutil, a lo frágil, %E0 lo que palpita %E0 la superficie de la materia: huellas, %E9scritos, líneas, manchas, vibraciones ínfimas que nos conmueven y nos %E9mover. «Subtil» proviene de «sub», «debajo», y «tela», «lienzo». Es como estar debajo de los hilos de la urdimbre al tejer, debajo de las palabras del texto, debajo de la piel de la arcilla. Con esa convicción, inquebrantable, de que en un mundo brutal, las cosas también tienen lugar en lo sutil, en lo secreto, que %E7a obra desde abajo, a pesar nuestro, que %E7a palpita y que %E7a resiste, infinitamente.
Esta búsqueda de lo sutil ha tomado forma, como siempre en mi caso, en recipientes: grandes cuencos, cajas, pero sobre todo en jarras, una nueva forma que he domesticado este invierno. Guiada por la fórmula mágica de Michel Leiris, «Arcilla: leo en ella la vasija» (en *Langage Tangage*), he intentado, a mi vez, leer esta forma con mis manos. Descifrando su base, su curvatura, su hombro, su cuello, sacando a la luz una arquitectura minimalista y amplia a la vez, ancestral y poderosa. Para guardar en su interior, ya no provisiones de pan, aceite o miel, sino, espero, sutiles reservas de significado.

For this new exhibition at the Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste, Océane Madelaine – a ceramicist and woman of letters – was initially haunted by words, and a title that simply imposed itself upon her: ‘In the Subtle’. The artist explains this choice and the essence of her approach to the exhibition as follows:
“It was a desire to pay attention to the tenuous, the fragile, to that which quivers on the surface of the material: traces, writings, lines, stains, minute vibrations that stir and move us. ‘Subtil’ comes from ‘sub’, meaning ‘under’, and ‘tela’, meaning ‘canvas’. We would be beneath the warp threads to be woven, beneath the words of the text, beneath the surface of the clay. With this unshakeable conviction that, in a brutal world, things also unfold in the subtle, in the secret; that they work from beneath, in spite of us; that they pulsate and resist, infinitely.
This quest for the subtle has taken shape, as it always does for me, in vessels: large bowls, boxes, but above all in jars, a new form I’ve come to terms with this winter. Guided by Michel Leiris’s magic formula, ‘Clay: I read the jar in it’ (in *Langage Tangage*), I, in turn, sought to read this form with my hands. To decipher its foot, its curve, its shoulder, its neck, revealing an architecture that is at once minimal and expansive, ancestral and powerful. To provide shelter, no longer for stores of wheat, oil or honey, but, I hope, for subtle reserves of meaning.

Für diese neue Ausstellung in der Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste ließ sich Océane Madelaine – Keramikerin und Literatin – zunächst von Worten inspirieren, und ein Titel drängte sich ihr geradezu auf: „Dans le subtil“. Die Künstlerin erläutert diese Wahl und das Wesen ihres künstlerischen Ansatzes für die Ausstellung wie folgt:
„Es war der Wunsch, dem Zarten, dem Zerbrechlichen, dem, was an der Oberfläche des Materials schimmert, Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken: Spuren, Schriftzüge, Linien, Flecken, winzige Schwingungen, die uns bewegen und berühren. Subtil kommt von sub, ‚unter‘, und tela, ‚Gewebe‘. Man befände sich unter den Fäden der zu webenden Kette, unter den Wörtern des Textes, unter der Haut des Tons. Mit dieser unerschütterlichen Überzeugung, dass in einer brutalen Welt die Dinge auch im Subtilen, im Verborgenen geschehen, dass sie von unten her wirken, trotz uns, dass sie pulsieren und Widerstand leisten, unendlich.
Diese Suche nach dem Subtilen hat, wie immer bei mir, in Gefäßen Gestalt angenommen: große Schalen, Schachteln, aber vor allem in Krügen, einer neuen Form, die ich diesen Winter für mich entdeckt habe. Geleitet von Michel Leiris’ Zauberformel „Ton: darin lese ich das Gefäß“ (aus „Langage Tangage“), habe ich meinerseits versucht, diese Form mit meinen Händen zu entschlüsseln. Den Fuß, die Wölbung, die Schulter, den Hals zu deuten und dabei eine Architektur freizulegen, die minimalistisch und zugleich weitläufig, uralt und kraftvoll ist. Um darin nicht mehr Vorräte an Weizen, Öl oder Honig, sondern – so hoffe ich – subtile Bedeutungsreserven zu bewahren.
