(En disant cela, il se tâtait partout.) » Diderot met en scène les corps, de La Religieuse au Rêve de D’Alembert : corps aveugle, corps contraint, corps en liberté. Il scrute sous toutes ses formes leur « pantomime », la danse, le jeu, l’expressivité des corps, au théâtre, dans la vie, dans la peinture. Le corps, à la fois donnée immanente et construction sensible, mentale, sociale, tient une place centrale dans sa philosophie matérialiste, portée par son inspiration atomiste, épicurienne, nourrie de la pensée médicale, et qui ne cesse d’interroger son « autre », la religion spiritualiste de l’incarnation.
