The 52-minute documentary traces the extraordinary life of Simonne Mathieu, a woman who left her mark on both the tennis courts and the history of the Resistance.
A legend of French tennis, Simonne Mathieu revolutionised her sport before committing herself to her country. Indeed, as early as 1940, Simonne Mathieu sacrificed her brilliant career to join General de Gaulle and fight the Nazi occupiers. She helped establish the Corps des Volontaires Françaises, France’s first all-female military corps, thereby enabling hundreds of women to officially join the war effort.
This event is organised as part of the Falaise Memorial’s temporary exhibition, ‘Women at
War – Commitment and Disillusionment’.
